Shouldn't braces be close to being obsolete by now?

With all the advances that have been made in technology over the years, don't you think that braces are becoming an aging technique?

The thing is though, it is broke. They take years to work and can sometimes be uncomfortable to the patient. In a time when people can have heart transplants, not to mention all the cosmetic surgeries that are available today, I just find the monopoly that braces have on the orthodontic industry to be, well, suspicious.
