How are fixed braces removed?!

Question: Just curious to find out how fixed braces are removed, and if its the same for lingual braces (ones behind the teeth)? Also, is it painful!?

taking braces off is not a painful experience but it is fast.

first the wire at the bands around the lingual wire is snipped to free up the bands.

than the bands are popped off by a special device. this can feel tight but not normally painful.

then each individual square gets popped off taking the wires and elastics with it.

after that you get a rattly drill on every tooth that had a square or band that flakes off all the cement that was used to hold them on.

if you have ever had a square broken during treatment you will remember that you never felt it break but heard a snappy noise. if you have not broken the brace first well done you, and secondly its just as i explained above.

enjoy your straight teeth.

No its not painful. They take the wire off first then each fixing is scraped off each tooth with a sort of mini hammer and chisel. Then the front of your teeth get polished to remove traces of the glue.

As we get older we have this phenomena called midline shift. This means that our teeth drift toward the center of our mouths as we age. It is best to leave the fixed retainer there so that you are ensured that the teeth will not move. I know people who have had theirs removed after many years and their teeth have shifted.
