Ok... Two Choices?!

Question: I Was At the dentist's today and they found a huge cavity... They Have to do Root Canal On Tuesday

He Gave Me two options... Root Canal Or Remove Tooth

He Said if i do decide to remove it, my wisdom tooth should take its place (space wise)

Im only 14, so if i do remove the tooth... I have to sit for two years and wait for my wisdom tooth to fill the gap?

HELP!!! Which one?

I'd go with the root canal. It's not a painful procedure as someone else said, because your dentist will make sure you don't feel any pain. At least you then still have some options - I mean what if the wisdom tooth doesn't come through, then you'd be left with a gap. I had to have a molar extracted when I wasn't much older than you and I've always regretted it. And yes, the wisdom tooth came through, but it's further back and it's not straight, so I still have a gap.

If your tooth is near back of your mouth i would go for the extraction, as i think it would be less stressful for you.--> I hear root canal is VERY painful! At the end of the day if your not going to notice it in a year or two it will soon fly by. I have had 2 massive gaps at the front of my mouth for nearly 6 months now and hardly anyone noticed it, apart from me that is!
Rememeber give your teeth a brush up twice a day ansd alot of dental work can be avoided.

Best of luck with which ever you decide x

...and in that two years, the tooth above (or below) the tooth you may have extracted will start to drift downward (or upward) since there's isn't an opposing tooth....and that may cause you more problems as an adult.

Get the root canal treatment, followed by a crown. You'll be happy that you did.

At 14, though, you'll need consent for treatment from your parents/guardian.... hopefully the dentist explained the pros/cons for each procedure to them so they'll be able to make an educated decision.

Good luck to you.

this happened to me when i was a teen. i had a really bad cavity in my back tooth with another one which was infected. i had both teeth extracted. the pain went away immediatly. no problem. today, i'm 25 and i have a mouth full of teeth. the other ones did feel the spaces...don't worry. i would get it extracted.

i had root canal done 11 year's it hurt's a bit but at least i've still got my tooth.

The only option you need to consider is do I get the root canal now and have a tooth in place until the wisdom tooth comes in or do I have the current tooth extracted and run the risk that my other teeth will shift into a not so good position due to the missing tooth not providing proper support. If you get the root canal and a later decision is that the wisdom tooth is a better choice for a permanent tooth, the tooth with the root canal can be extracted a couple of months prior to the wisdom tooth's arrival...Xrays can keep track of what stage the wisdom tooth is in.

I would do the root canal.....much better to save teeth. What if the wisdom tooth doesn't erupt like he thinks it will.........could happen........Save your tooth it will be better in the long run. Good luck
