Retainer Again?!

Question:

Retainer Again?

I haven't worn mine for quite a few months, I have two sets. a pre-retainer.. one that's just all plastic which have all of my teeth formed into it and the other one which is the plastic with the metal that goes in front of the teeth. If I wear it again regularly, though they barely, if at all, fit.. do you think maybe my teeth will go back to wear it's more comfortable to wear it again? The spaces in my teeth aren't so bad, but I'd like to maybe fix it again, after all.. I had braces for almost five years (though I was only supposed to have them for a few months, because I had teeth pulled and had to have the spaces filled, but they kept finding things to "improve". yeah right.).. and I don't want to have had all that pain to be pointless and wasted.

Answers:

The key word in retainer is retain. Normally a retainer is for holding the position, but if not worn the teeth can and will move. If you still have your wisdom teeth coming in you should probably get them out. They can really mess up orthodontic treatment. You might also be a bruxer. Someone who clenches or grinds their teeth at night or during the day even. This force you put on your teeth can and will make them move around. You can get an appliance made that protects your teeth from the wear caused by grinding and also retains your teeth in the position it was when the appliance was made for you. I'm telling you these things because yes, you MAY be able to make your retainer feel comfortable again after wearing it for several days, but if you don't continue wearing it, the teeth will keep moving.
