I have a permanent retainer on the bottom ( 10 years now) and I like it because it's one less thing to worry about. Although for the top, a removable retainer is the better way to go. Permanent on top just doesn't work as well, And, sometimes the removable retainers will make you sore. If you have to wait a couple of weeks after you get your braces off to get your retainers then your teeth will move a little and the retainers will move them back. The movement is what causes the soreness. And just for the record, the permanent retainers are removable (not by the patient but by the Dr.) . I've seen them being removed several times. If you wear those retainers like your supposed too then your fine with your decision, so don't worry!

Okay, I have to add this because I was reading some other answers.

Your removable retainers don't get gross, unless you don't brush them regularly. You will talk funny at first but after a little while you'll sound normal. You can't even tell I have mine in when I talk anymore. Also, if your retainer were to crack with out you doing something to make it crack, I'm sure your ortho would replace it no charge.

Don't make me type my whole retainer speech people!! Just playing, I would if someone asked me too. =-)
