My son chewed his cheek!?!

Question:

My son chewed his cheek!?

My son., he is three. He had two fillings at the dentist yesterday and got his mouth numbed. We went home yesterday and I noticed because of the numbness he managed to check a chunk of the inside of his cheek! I showed a couple of friends, they just said to gargle with salt water, but his cheek is swollen. It looks yellow as if new tissue is coming in. Can anyone give me advice! Thank you!!

Answers:

Well, even though it might look as though it's infected, my guess is that it's not. When someone takes a chunk out of their cheek [I'm sure you've done the same thing while eating, huh?] it will swell and the area usually looks yellow. Unfortunately, when it swells, the area is then prone to more biting so don't be surprised if your son chews it again. The warm salt water is a good suggestion but don't count on a 3yo to be too cooperative and the healing will probably take about 3 days.....unless he continues to chew it. The next time you son gets numbed up, as the office to give you some cotton rolls and have you son keep one in his cheek until the anesthetic wears off. Good luck!
