Rubberbands and powerchains???!

Question: I just went to the orthodontist today and I got a powerchain on the bottom and rubberbands that go from front to back. They hurt so bad, anyone had these and know how long before teeth feel normal again? What can I do to alleviate the pain besides painkillers?

Powerchains are generally used to close spaces between your teeth. Rubberbands are used to bring your bite together and align your teeth a certain way. When yoiur teeth from top and bottom line up a certain way the Orthodontist or General Dentist put yoiur mouth in a certain class. And ideally he/she wants yoiur mouth to be in a Class I Occlussion. If you do not wear yoiur rubberbands your teeth will not shift and fall into the appropriate Class that the Dentist has planned specifically for you. You HAVE TO BE COMPLIANT AND WEAR YOUIR RUBBERBANDS if yoiu want to get out of your braces on time. I'm guessing yoiu are in Class II elastics and the elastics go from your top canines to yoiur lower first molars. If this is the case....yoiu may have a small opening in yoiur bite (overbite) and he/she is trying to bring yoiur upper teeth closer to yoiur lower teeth to close the space. And the power chain was probably placed because A) yoiu either have gaps or B) your lowers have no spaces and he/she is trying to keep the teeth in the position that they are already in. Until your Dentist sees that yoiur Centrals, Laterals, Cuspids, Bicuspids and Molars are lining up correctly from top to bottom......yoiur trmt. will continue. It is common for a Dentist to have a pt. wear elastics for months at a time and then he may have you NOT wear them for months at a time. The same thing applies to wearing power chains. Sometimes power chains are used to maintain the position that teeth are in....and other times they are used to close gaps.
