Panoramic x-ray for wisdom teeth?!

Panoramic x-rays are great for bigger anatomy. We use them to see where your nerve is in the lower jaw, and to see if any of your roots are in/near the sinus. They can show cavities, but aren't the best for that. The smaller individual x-rays called periapicals are much better. They show the spaces between the teeth and are clearer in detail.

Pano xrays show most things. Fillings, crowns, wisdom teeth, and yes... some advanced cavities. The dentist will still need to give your mouth a good looking over though - it doesn't catch ALL cavities.
panoramic x-rays show you the sides of the teeth and the teeth under the gums. cavities can be anywhere on the tooth and can be very small. dentists look at the tooth and use a pointy tool to grab to see if there is a cavity and how deep it is.
