Braces, braces, braces..?!

Question:

Braces, braces, braces..?

I never had really bad teeth, but in September 2006, I decided to get braces. All I really wanted to do was to correct a gap in my two front teeth. The space has been closed for over a year now, but since then, I've been told that bottom braces were absolutely neccessary, and I feel as if I'm getting myself deeper and deeper into orthodontic treatment. My braces are painful and still kind of embarassing, and are starting to cause some problems with my teeth and gums. I'm terrible with following up on all of my appointments, and because of all the missed appointments I'm probably at least 6 months behind in treatment from where I should be! It looks as if I'm not getting these things off for a while, and I'm just DYING for them to come off! Are there any alternatives I can discuss with my ortho? What about headgear for the nighttime? Can I just get them off early with subpar results? Would my ortho let me get a retainer for what has already been done? I can't see my ortho for a while...

...because I still have to make an appointment, and they're always really booked, so I'm going to have to wait quite some time (probably at least a month). Also, my ortho is not always the most friendly guy, and will blow me off if I ask too many questions. How can I talk to him?

Answers:

You are embarrassed because YOU feel embarrassed, it most likely isn't other people. Smile - people who smile look better with or without braces. You may want to ask some men what they think of you/your braces - and how you look. Many men think women look better - it isn't the braces, it's more that it makes your lips a little more pronounced, and rather gives you a more vulnerable look, and I think many men find that appealing. I'm not sure why they do. I wouldn't worry about your braces at all. I'd focus on the rest of your face which is what people really look at anyway. Do a good job taking care of your skin, do your lips and eyes really nice, and that's what people look at. They don't look at your braces near as much as you think they do. People just don't care that much. IT's more how you feel about it. If you have confidence about yourself, then it won't matter what you have in your mouth. I think it does affect how you feel about yourself, but hopefully I've convinced you not to worry about it, take care of yourself, do what you have to do. There are supermodels with braces, and they don't really take shots of them with a big metal smile, but they do take plenty of them otherwise, and it's not unrealistic at all. The more you take care of things the better you will do. It's only for a short amount of time relatively. IT sounds like you have a conflict with your ortho, and I'm not sure what to do about that. I wouldn't get them off early. The headgear is the thing that moves your teeth. It would be better to wear it more and have faster results than to not wear it and have to wear braces longer. The more you wear it the more your teeth will move. People who are attractive are still attractive, even with braces and headgear. Braces and headgear don't make an attractive person unattractive, they are still attractive. I don't know how to convince you of that. You'll just be viewed as fixing your teeth, and taking care of yourself. It isn't a bad thing. If you view it as a bad thing then it is, it's all in your mind and how you think.

why don't you do a video and ask people to comment on how you look, and ask them to be honest. They'll tell you. You'll find that it probably doesnt matter, but maybe for some people. (for You Tube)
