Partial Denture Help?!

Question: Just looking for some advice from anyone that has a partial Denture. I am 32 and a little scared. I am getting an upper partial for my back teeth afer 3 extractions on one side due to fillings falling out. And 2 extractions on the other side due to badly decayed teeth. (could have root canals and crown but way more expensive). All other teeth are fine. I am worried that I will look different, sound different, and have a hard time eating. I am married and have 2 children. My husband says I am being stupid. Is this a silly fear. I have a long life yet and right now I am very depressed. Always took care of my teeth. Also worried about those intamte times with Hubby. Don't want to worry about teeth falling out. Help?

I had two of my bottom front teeth pulled last April. I also had spaces in between my teeth, so my partial has four teeth. It was a little uncomfortable at first because I had to use the partial paste to keep them in. I had a little trouble at first with talking, but it went away rather quickly, the more I got used to it. (By the way, I'm 37.) I got my permanent partial after about six weeks, and they are great. I had to go in a couple of times to the dentist to have them adjusted, but after that it was great. Now they don't even bother me. I take them out at night and let them soak. Once a week, I use denture cleanser as instructed by my dentist. When you go in to have your teeth cleaned, they will ask you to take them out so they can clean them (with some kind of special machine), but it's ready when the hygienist finishes cleaning your teeth. I even take them out sometimes when I'm eating--this is more at home than out in public. (HA HA). I have had a very good experience with my partial, and my self-esteem has also had a positive boost. With your partial being in the back of your mouth it shouldn't cause any trouble. I wish you all the best with your partial.

I would think you may have a small learning curve with talking with your new partial, but probably not much. A full denture would be much worse. I bet your biggest concern will be sore spots at first and some soreness in teeth. Try very hard to keep the partial in as much as possible so you can learn to accept it. Take the partial out when sleeping and brush it with a firm brush and soak in denture cleaner. Don't wear them at night. The tissues need time to not have all that pressure on them.
As far as how you will look....not replacing teeth makes the cheeks sink in and other teeth to shift around. Some teeth will even start to erupt out of the socket. This will create more problems down the road. My best advice would be to start saving your money for either permanent bridge work or implants. Use the partial for now, but plan to replace the missing teeth with something that won't be taken in or out. Visit your dentist twice a year and catch decay or gum disease before it gets to advanced and too expensive. Don't beat yourself up about this......its done (or will be soon). Now work on how to keep the rest of the teeth healthy. Avoid sugary drinks such as soda pop or coffee/tea with sugar added, smoking, chewing gum or mints with sugar.
Your husband hopefully will only care that you are not in pain and not care that you are missing a couple back teeth.

Quit your worry!! In a few weeks you will hardly know they are there. Will talk a little different at first. They do no fall out. Doc W
