How should medical professional respond to a hug from a patient?!

Question:

How should medical professional respond to a hug from a patient?

(Here's a question thats not about invisalign, or whitening!)

I am interested to know how others deal with this. Do you and should you hug back?

Ok I know you may think it would be strange for anyone to even touch a dentist with a 50 foot pole, but this actually happened to me today, after I got a patient out of some extreme pain; this has happened with other patients also. My initial response was "cool a free hug". but then it was "oh ... rats... I don't know if I can hug back... I could get sued"

Answers:

Accept a hug ~ and yes ~ give an acknowledging hug back ~ but be professional ~ Are we not human beings ~ The patient was extremely pleased to be out of pain, it would be a normal way to thank someone ~

This is scary to think that people are loosing their human nature ~ This should not be ~ there is a difference in a small acknowledging hug and a hugging grope ~

Where are we going ??????? Be professional and acknowledge!
