Have you EVER been refused anaesthetic at the dentist when you were having a fil!

Question:

Have you EVER been refused anaesthetic at the dentist when you were having a filling?

I wasn't ALLOWED to have anaesthetic all through my childhood .... the sound of the drill still sends shivers through my spine.

The first time I had my mouth numbed was when I was 23 and even then (and now) I had to have an antibiotic first (full prescription charge for one sachet).

Needless to say, the psychosomatic effect on me was that anything 'dental' made me feel sick, even brushing my teeth, so I didn't for a long time and yes, I did pay the price of that.

I have a hole in my heart so they didn't want to risk anything happening. I'm not allowed to give blood for the same reason. Now that REALLY annoys me.

Answers:

Same as you, when I was a kid. I had to have 2 BIG fillings (in permanent teeth) done with no anaesthetic and it scared the sh*te outta me. After that dentist, I had a bad experience at the orthodontist where she pulled half of my back tooth off removing my brace, oh and she didnt wear gloves. Then, next dentist, used to put me so far back in the chair my head was below my feet and I threw up. My new dentist is a gem, and is helping me overcome my fear. He always asks how I am while doing treatment and even when I threw up on him the first time I met him, hes still great. :D Its such a nightmare when childhood experiences haunt you throughout adulthood, esp something like docs and dentists as it makes healthcare rather difficult! Sending hugs xx
