I had a molar extracted a couple months ago. Recently, out of the blue, the are!

Question:

I had a molar extracted a couple months ago. Recently, out of the blue, the area starts hurting. What gives?

I followed all my dentist's instructions to avoid dry socket. I don't believe that's the problem, because I always had the blood clot. The area is healed, but I have pain inside the gum. The pain comes and goes. When it comes, it's pretty intense. It hurts so much that I can sometimes even feel it near my jaw or even my ear. I'm wondering if this is "phantom tooth?" If so, how long does this last?

Answers:

I had my wisdom teeth removed 8 years ago and still have the same issue as you. Over time the pain will become less and will not happen as frequently.

The gums willswell up where they were (however it's weird because they never grew in).

I read in a medical journal that it isn't common. Only about 1% of dental patients will have this occur. If you are worried about it, you should speak with your dentist. It might not be a a phantom tooth, and there could be something else causing the pain.
