How long does it take a tooth to develop a 4 millimeter deep pin type hole cavit!

Question:

How long does it take a tooth to develop a 4 millimeter deep pin type hole cavity into it at the gumline?

If you had a dental checkup, several including cleanings and fillings with xrays done, should a reasonable dentist have caught that? It was on the middle outside of molar #31.

Damn Painful. I think I might sue for time off work also. It costs lots of money to get tooth pulled. I wasn't gonna get root canal and have a failure of that too. These people don't realize the pain they cause people and it is high time they do!

I would not sue because I got a cavity. The suit would be because the dentist did not catch it in last exam. 4mm is about 1/4" deep into the middle of the molar. It was painful. I was told only option now was to pull or do root canal. Had the dentist caught it, I would just have had a filling at that time. Am I making sense yet? It costs me time and money and pain and suffering to have it root canalled or pulled. Isn't that what they have malpractice insurance for? When they don't do their job properly?

These dentists are getting about $200 per 30 min visit/procedure. I realize they have expenses, but I will never see that amount of money in that amount of time. They should earn it, or give some back.

Answers:

Usually these types of small cavities, start in what are call pits and fissures. They are tiny pin sized depressions and grooves in a tooth. Even though radiographs are taken, they can be very misleading on a radiograph.
