Depending on the program, ortho is 2-3 years AFTER dental school. (Orthodontics is one of the hardest specialty to get into; just because you go to dental school won't mean you will get to be an orthodontist. Of the ~25 ppl in my class that applied (out of 100), less than half of them got in.) Dental schools is usually 4 years long, and that is AFTER going to undergrad (which is also usually 4 years long). Grand total: 10-11 years of higher education.

The cost of schooling depends on whether you go to a public or private school; for dental schools, public ones are aroun 160,000+ for 4 years; private ones are 250,000+.

As for having time to be a mother during schooling, none of my female classmates chose to have children during schooling. either they already had children, or they had them after they graduated. there were a few male classmates who had kids, but their wife was available to take care of the kids. Dental school is very consuming; its not only an 8-5 class schedule, but you will have to study ALOT after class, and have lab projects to complete as well. It's not something to be taken lightly.

It's hard work to become a dentist, but the lifestyle it affords you is worth it. You'll be making at least 100,000/ year for most areas, and will be very well respected in your community. So overall, at least i would say, the time and effort is worth it to hold this professional degree.
