Soft bristled toothbrushes?!

Question: I've heard before that any toothbrush which is harder than a soft bristle is bad for you, because it breaks down your gums and teeth. Is this true?

Yes, medium and hard bristles toothbrushes are hard enough that daily use is shown to cause gum recession which can cause bone loss b/c anytime the gum receeds the bone level will automatically adjust itself to be farther away from the gum level once again. Also, it can cause wearing away of your enamel/tooth. This can cause major sensitivity, cavities, etc. A soft one actually brushes better b/c the bristles can flex slightly below the gumline to keep that area clean. However, scrubbing way to hard with a soft can have the same effect. For the best of both worlds, get a soft bristled electric toothbrush. This way you feel like you got the hard bristled clean and you just let the electric toothbrush do the work. No pushing down hard or scrubbing. How do you know if you are brushing too hard? 1. Look at the bristles when you brush. If they bend a lot or flare out a lot, it is too hard. 2. If the bristles on your toothbrush often quickly begin to stick out of alignment you have been brushing too hard. Also, anytime the bristles are no longer aligned. It is time for a new toothbrush.

Yes it is. And don't brush too hard even with a soft toothbrusth.

It is true. Medium and hard bristle toothbrushes can cause gum recession and enamel abrasion. Not good! Always use a soft bristle toothbrush for at least 3 minutes.

My dentist recommended that I use an Oral-B extra-soft brush, which is even softer than a soft brush. Also, depending on your age and mouth configuration, consider using a #40 or #44 brush. Oral-B also has an ergonomic handle for comfort while brushing.

Yes, it is. Only buy toothbrushes labeled as soft.
