Wisdom tooth extraction unsuccessful--> Is this normal????!

Question: My boyfriend (28 years old) never had his wisdom teeth removed. One of his wisdom teeth (upper) started aching and causing some problems. He felt there was a hole or cavity in it and food would get stuck in it and also it was giving him headaches from time to time. He went to his dentist and the dentist decided that it should come out. He went yesterday to have the extraction done and he was there from 3:30 until 6:00. The dentist worked and worked on him but just couldn't get the tooth out. At one point he heard a large crack and said he felt a release of pressure and he thought the tooth came out but it didn't. The dentist was able to get some pieces of the tooth out and he grinded the tooth down a lot and put a couple stiches in. The dentist told him that he had grinded the tooth down low enough that his gums will probably just grow over it so that it doesn't bother him anymore. He gave him some advil and gauze and sent him home (no charge). Has anyone ever heard of this happening?

Oral surgeon.

Either your BF has an unqualified dentist tending him or something is being left out.

No qualified provider would grind anything down and hope for the best.

What you describe and the condition in which it was left sounds highly suspect to me.

See an oral surgeon.

no. but thats really weird though.

mine was. i had an x ray prior to the tooth extraction because the wisdom tooth was impacted....similarly there is a tiny hole though & the fud gets into it also. my dentist friend says there must be a tooth fragment . gingival abcess do occur if the wound has never healed...

in my opinion, better yet have it removed by specialist (oral surgeon) to avoid complications... in every action there is an equal reaction.. the remaining tooth structure is small maybe about 1-2mm.. you may leave it behind.. but more than that better have it removed or else complications might happen... cyst may develop or worse... so have it check by a specialist..

tell him to get some X-rays of his teeth the dentist might have broken the tooth and left some root in it...it might cause infection.....maybe he did it well who knows...but better to check...and almost 3 hours for just one wisdome...gee what is he givin birth...i helped my father pull 2 in 1/2 an hour or so i swear...and it was successfull
