Hi :)
I too had actually a big chunk of my filling fall out. It was really old. I left it for about a year. It didn't hurt. Don't worry! Call your dentist and tell them. As well I was getting a root canal on another part of my mouth and the filling for that fell out. If you are getting a filling for a root canal, its okay. They have already drilled out the roots/nerves. The second appointment they will fill it in with a permanent filling. The third appointment they put the permanent part on the tooth part. Nothing is wrong. Just call them and explain and they will tell you.
Good luck :)

I would definitely call your dentist because if all the filling comes out and the nerve becomes exposed you will be in some serious pain. A phone call never hurts, if it turns out to be normal then he will tell you to wait, if it is important they will schedule you an appointment.

I agree with "Strap". Whether it's a filling associated with a root canal or simply a filling due to some lighter tooth decay and filling, when you lose some of the filling you are exposing a portion of the tooth to higher levels of food and other foreign substance that can cause further decay, and can cause you some pain if the tooth is sensitive to cold or heat. As well, you're leaving a more fragile tooth exposed to a higher chance of chipping or other damage which may cause a need for rebuilding a tooth and crowning it, so, as "Strap" said, call the dentist ASAP!! God Bless you.

Well funny you ask this question because about 4 months ago i was eating a tootsie roll pop and my filling totally fell out leaving a pretty big hole in my tooth, it wasn't painful but i did have it repaired about a week later. I f your wondering what they do in this case is really just a bit of drilling and they refill the hole not a big deal, but i wouldn't want to do it again.
Good luck!!!
