What does it mean if you have a sensitive tooth?!

Question:

What does it mean if you have a sensitive tooth?

And its not a cavity, the dentist already checked. But its sensitive to hot and cold food and drinks. Sometimes it will hurt a little if I eat a crunchy or hard food on that side. What does that mean? Any suggestions or comments?

And come to think of it, a couple pieces were chipped off on that same side, my left side(probably that tooth), when I ate some Milk Duds. Just some extra info.

Can dentists miss it if it is a crack? Wouldn't they know?

Answers:

If you are brushing to hard you can cause your gums to recede, as well as make little notches in your tooth right at the gum line (tooth brush abrasion) If you buy some sensedyne toothpaste, put some on your finger and rub it in to the sensitive areas. this will build up a mineral layer on the tooth and it may reduce the sensitivity. If the pain in on the top of the tooth, (the biting surface) and it hurts to bite it could be a crack,or a leaking filling.
