Underbite surgery?!

Question: Hey, I was just wondering if you guys could give me your opinion that whether i should go for an underbite surgery or not.

I have a very slight underbite. I went to see a orthodontist asking about my teeth and whether do i need to put braces for both top and bottom. She told me that I only have to put braces on the top part as my bottom is perfectly okay. But she said that i have underbite and that my bottom set of teeth are sort of growing at an angle that cannot be pushed back any further. So she told me to go for the surgery. :(

I decide to give it some thought now, and i would like to know your opinion. I have read abit on expander, would it help to expand the top part of my jaw so that it covers the bottom part alittle?

Sorry if I didn't give enough details...
Thanks! :)

A second or even a third opinion with different orthodontists would be advisable before it is concluded that jaw surgery is the right answer for your underbite. Advanced techniques of today has left jaw surgery no longer a scary matter what is used to be 20 years back, though the cost is still an uncomfortable factor.

It is doubtful if you would be pleased with the results that your "slight underbite" correction is going to bring. If significant (cosmetic) difference in your appearance is not likely to be visible, better drop the idea of surgery and be happy with whatever results orthodontic treatment is going to produce.

However, this suggestion does not hold good if you have any jaw pain, etc due to this underbite. How well you are covered with insurance may influence your decision.

Surgery? Why not just have braces?

I would see a second orthodontist for another opinion before you do anything drastic. Good luck!
