Durring a filling to have no numbing, Is this normal?!

Question: My 3 y/o had 2 cavities fill. When they brought him back to me, he had been crying, and said that his mouth hurt. The nurse did stated that he was not numb, so he shold not bite his gum or lip. It did not hit me at the time to ask her if he had not been numbed through the procedure. Does any one know, for my piece of mind?

Quite often if the cavity is very shallow the dentist won't use novicane or other deadener as there could always be a problem when they are giving the shot especially to a 3 yo. It really doesn't hurt as much as you would believe especially with shallow cavities. Also, a 3 yo sometimes will bite their lip and make more of a problem if their mouth had been numbed and it lasts for 3 or 4 hours before the numbing disappears. Sounds like a good dentist.

He has to have been numbed or he could not have sat through it. It would have been excrutiating. The better questions is: Why does your 3 year old already have cavities being filled?

I would call them and ask and would be concerned. Next time go back with your child while he is being worked on. If they say you shouldn't be there, find another dentist right away. I would be pissed !!!!! It's not the end of the world and your son will be fine, but I am concerned how he will feel on future appointments. It's a big deal for children to feel safe at the dentist. Don't take anything less than this and stay with your child. This is to the dentist. What do you mean by it doesn't hurt as much as you'd think. Well how much does it hurt??? The child is three years old being taken back and worked on by people he doesn't know. Get a clue. The reason children when they grow up are so terrified of dentist is because of issues like this.

if she told him not to bite his gum or lip then she meant he was numb. because he cant feel it if he is numb and when he de (numbs) he will feel it. i think u misheard
