It is actually quite a serious problem and its on the increase so its fast becoming one of the most problems we see in people who otherwise take good care of their teeth. And its very difficult to treat.

As you pint out its important to eat healthy but some people (esp young women) eat 3 or 4 pieces of fruit per day. This is enough to cause acid erosion. Do not eat more than one apple per day. It is better to cut fruit up so that you are not biting into it with your front teeth which are much thinner than your molars. Do not sip on fruit juices through the day. If you drink OJ drink it in one go. Do not brush your teeth immediately after having fruit juice as your teeth will be weakened and the enamel is more easily worn away. Drink milk or eat cheese after fruit as this will neutralise the acid.

If you get acid reflux or if you vomit frequently (e.g. morning sickness). DO NOT BRUSH afterwards!!! Even though you really want to. Chew some gum to neutralise the acid or better still (if you can stomach it) rinse out with milk.

Fruit is very important but some is very acidic. Everything in moderation! Fizzy diet drinks are the worst culprits. Try to avoid them.

Don't panic too much about it....its just a marketing ploy on the TV adverts...you would need to actually immerse your teeth in strong acid for hours for the enamel to be seriously damaged.....just clean your teeth as normal and you will be fine.........

Brushing 2-3 times a day, flossing at least once a day, and rinsing with listerine is essential in keeping your teeth in healthy shape.

It is a good choice to brush your teeth about an hour after you eat, because if you brush immediately after you eat, you will be brushing the food into your teeth because your teeth have softened up a little from chewing, which is normal. So waiting an hour is good because your teeth aren't as soft and vulnerable.

Just because some healthy foods are deemed acidic, it doesn't mean you should stay away from them completely. Just be wise in the serving size you eat and how much intake you get of it.

If you do have it, I would recommend buying a toothpaste made especially for enamel. Almost all the toothpaste brands have special kinds for enamel, ie; Colgate, Crest, Sensodyne, etc. These toothpastes will fill in soft spots and harden the enamel, making it harder for acid to attack your teeth. There are also some great mouthwashes that help your enamel harden and stop acid from attacking.

Hope that helps!

no

nope. don't have. i visit my dentist at least every six months.

Soda is usually the main way people dissolve their teeth. Both regular and diet contain acid. Gatorade, flavored water, juices, etc. all are bad. Only plain water doesn't contain acid.

A dental office can give you fluoride VARNISH treatments and calcium/enamel re-mineralizing toothpaste (MI Paste, or Denclude are common professional brands) to try to reverse acid damage. We use it with our patients everyday.

Only one over the counter toothpaste is at all similar. It is Arm & Hammer ENAMEL CARE. It is hard to find in the stores. Read the fine print, the other enamel rebuilding claims on toothpaste only come from the fluoride content, nothing new there.
