Is it bad to brush teeth to much? I brush my teeth a lot, I used to about 8 or m!

Question:

Is it bad to brush teeth to much? I brush my teeth a lot, I used to about 8 or more time, it's just a habit.

I stopped brushing as much, now I only do it about 5 to six times.

Answers:

It is not a great idea to brush too often. I am all about clean teeth, but as a dental hygienist I know that too frequent brushing may strip away the enamel or the gum surrounding the teeth. Brushing 2-3 times daily for 2 minutes with a soft toothbrush will remove the soft sticky plaque that builds up on the teeth and gums. If you do not build up plaque it cannot turn into tartar (otherwise known as calculus) and if it isn't present it can't cause decay or gingivitis. If you remove too much gum tissue (called recession) you are likely to end up with sensitive teeth and more cavities since the porous roots of the teeth become exposed. When these roots become exposed acids can get into those areas and cause cavities, especially in people that take multiple medications that have the side effect of dry mouth. I would recommend having your teeth cleaned every 6 months and if you feel strongly about it maybe every 3 months instead, though insurance doesn't usually cover the cost. Good luck and happy brushing!
