I have TMJ since getting all my wisdom teeth out when I was in my mid-twenties. For me, things that trigger it are:
1. Biting on hard foods such as nuts or chocolate that's been in the fridge too long.
2. Yawning too wide.
3. Lying on my side - puts pressure on jaw joints.
4. Holding my mouth open too long - ie in the dentist's chair.

Ask to see another orthodontist, as you may be having an allergive reaction to the brace, ask for anti-biotics and ask to have to brace changed for a different material manufactured type.

i had tmj,and it was absolutely horrible, and doctors refused to treat it,i went to an oral surgeon to see if having my wisdom teeth removed would help,he said maybe, and i was short on funds so i put it off and suffered.i was under a great deal of stress and have depression,so that tension was making me clench my teeth, thereby causing the tmj.it wasn't until my stress levels decreased for an extended period of time that it subsided.it hasn't bothered me for about a year, but it will be back,it has come on and off through the years.my mom suggested muscle relaxants, but my doctor wouldn't prescribe them because i live alone with my kids and she doesn't want me sleeping through a fire or something.ridiculous,i think.but be agressive if you want help, because in my experience, doctors don't care about tmj or don't think its real.
