Duration of relevance of dental X-ray?!

Question:

Duration of relevance of dental X-ray?

Since having my first braces removed when I was 17, my teeth have gradually spread - maybe partially due the fact I never had wisdom teeth, so there is plenty of space there. Now I am 34 and intend to get braces put on again. I had 2 X-rays taken under the instruction of a dentist and orthodontist in preparation for braces - the ultimate one was in February 2007. I have since been traveling, and have been unable to get the braces. I consider the teeth to be stable now, and I may not be able to get braces until November 2007. How long will the X-ray be relevent for before I need another one (as I want to minimize the number of X-rays I have)? Regards, Mike.

Answers:

The ADA ( American Dental Association) recommends bite-wing xrays for examinations at least every two years...more often if there is something going on that the Dentist is watching.

For Braces, I'm sure you are having the Panographic xray taken. I would think that the Dentist would like to see a film (or digital image) that is no more that six months old before he puts the braces on.

Once the braces are off, the dentist will most likely give you a retained to wear. WEAR IT! Not wearing a retainer probably contributed more to your teeth moving than not having wisdom teeth (3rd Molars).
