Impressions at the Dentist?!

Question:

Impressions at the Dentist?

My friend and I always work together on our science fair projects and we made it past our high school fair this past year which got us thinking and we would like to go to MIT next year. We were talking about testing mouthguards, which kinds work the best, prevent injury and we were going to make a rig but we need to make teeth to use in our project. So I thought of making a mold like they do at the dentist but I don't know what type of material they use when they do impressions. Would it work if we used clay and then cooked it? And what material could we use to make the teeth out of? My friend was thinking cement or resin.

Answers:

Congratulations on a good idea for a project. I am sure that if you called your dentist and told him your plans that he/she would be more than happy to help you with the materials. I know that i would!! We use alginate for the impressions and I would think you would use resin for the teeth.
