Does anyone here ever heard of a fisher/cleft palate?!

Question: My son is almost 7 y/o, and about to have an adnoidectomy and tonsilectomy. At his pre-op appt, the surgeon mentioned that he has a fisher (sp?) on the palate of his mouth. She says it is where he started to form a cleft palate as a fetus, but it healed before birth. I remember the dentist saying that as well. Anyway, his ped has never mentioned it. The surgeon said that it can cause grave complication during/after surgery on the adnoids, due to air infiltrating the sinus cavity? She says she will take precautions, and remove as litte tissue as possible, but I am nervous. I dont quite understand what a fisher is, why he has it, if it can/has caused anything else, and why no one has mentioned it before now? Any help please?

A cleft palate is when the roof of the mouth doesn't close completely. The mouth and nasal cavities are exposed to each other. Fissure means there is a crack of some sort there. It could be healed but there is still a risk of rupturing the fissure. Your kid is luckier than others since that could have deformed his roof of mouth and upper lip. You probably see photos online.

Some peds. may not see it since it was closed. The dentist gets a better look inside and is trained to look out for things that might interfere with procedures.

You should ask a doc about this since more docs know about this now and can fix it, if needed.

fissure?
