What is the average age for a child's first dentist visit?!

Question: Just wondering. I have heard conflicting answers to this question (even from MDs).

We recommend age three...

The child accompanies the parent to THEIR dental checkup, and if they want to get in the chair and 'take a ride', we let them. If they let us count their teeth, we do it.. if they let us clean them, we do it.

If they're freaked out by the whole thing, we just wait 6 months and don't push the issue.

Seems to work well in our office, by the time they're 4, it's a green light..... and the 'good kid prize' doesn't hurt, either.

:)

Start at 1 your never to young I have bad teeth and my 5 yr long just broke a molar. My parents didnt take me to a dentist and I am paying for it now please remeber go to the dentist!!

I think around age 1.

Age 2 is when we used to see kids in our dental office.
We had a couple younger than that - but it was usually because of a problem.
At 2 they are able to sit in the chair and follow simple directions - it's very important to find a practice that works well with children and that your child feels comfortable in and likes.
we always went to a family dentist until my son started having major problems - our family dentist didn't want to treat him - and recommended a pedodontist for him -- that was wonderful - we've never left there!!
Before the age of 2 - you should be brushing their teeth etc - and not putting them to bed with milk or juice.... only water in bed if you must give them something. this will help cut down on tooth decay.
