Hurts: 6/10 Discomfort: 9/10

1. Injection to numb

2. Drill into the root cavity

3. Remove the nerve with wire implement

4. Drain the tooth

5. Treat the cavity with anti biotic

6. Full the cavity (normaly with pins)

7. Close the cavity as per filling

8. Grind filling to fit check for bite

9. Its over (about 30-40min)

i'm a dental nurse, it shouldn't hurt at all and if it does at any time you can ask the dentist to stop. he/she should always give you a safe signal (usually lifting you hand) if you want to stop at any time.

they will drill into the tooth, then using some small instruments remove the root, you will have anesthetic so you'll not feel this unless there is a LOT of infection, but then you can have a top up of anesthetic if needed. it shouldn't take longer than an hour and a half but if you're worried i'm sure you can take an ipod or mp3 player in so you can listen to your own music to take your mind off it.

seeing the patients through the procedure they don't appear to be in discomfort so i'm sure you'll be fine.

The actual process didn't hurt at all. My nerve was completely dead already. There was a little discomfort at times, but not too bad - the worst part was the numbing shot in the roof of my mouth. Basically they drill like they would a cavity, then use a little brush to clean out inside of your tooth, xray it to see if they're far enough until its all gone. If you're getting a cap, they file down your tooth pretty small. Then they do a temp filling and cap until your permanent comes in (at least that's how mine worked). Afterwards my face hurt quite a bit so I recommend taking some Aleve or some other anti-inflammatory/pain reliever.

First, you won't feel anything, because they completely numb you with novocain.
When it has taken effect, they drill down to the nerve, and remove it. Then they fill the hole. It shouldn't even hurt AFTER the novocaine wears off, because the nerve--which is the part that makes you feel pain--is gone. You might have mild discomfort at the site of the injection, but Ibuprofen will take care of it.

I've had several, and trust me--the anticipation is worse than the root canal itself!

I had one bad experience and one not so bad...

The first root canal I had was when I was very young and the dentist did not give me enough Novocaine so I felt a lot of the procedure. I thought it was supposed to hurt so I didn't ask them to stop, but I think a good dentist should have noticed that I was wincing and had tears rollig down my face.

The second one did not hurt-- the only thing that I hated was the 5 shots of Novocaine, some on the roof of my mouth. On a scale of 1--10 those hurt about and 8.5.

Good luck-- make sure you speak up if something hurts!

i've had 7 so far, only one hurt. watch out for meds that the dentist gives you after the fact,...most want to prescribe vicodin (bad idea for alot of people) personally it makes me barf! i can take the after surgery pain with high dose motrin, so i refuse to take any scrips that make me sick.

i had a huge root canal, the docotors biggest case, and it did not hurt at all.
