The nitrous oxide [happy gas] only works as long as you are breathing it. When the dentist puts you on pure oxygen, the feeling begins to go away almost immediately and is usually completely gone in a minute but you still have to breathe oxygen for a while to completely clear the gas out of your bloodstream.
As far as the anesthetic goes. If you have an injection on the top teeth the numbness lasts a couple of hours. If you have an injection on the lower ones you are looking at around 3-4 hours. On the top teeth you have an infiltration, while on the bottom teeth you have a nerve block.
