Lower ... bar behind bottom teeth?!

Question: A few years ago when I had my braces taken off a lower bar-like (lack of a better word?) thing was put behind my lower teeth and as far as I can remember, I wasn't really told what it was for and just assumed it was to keep my lower teeth straight until the next time I went, however; for one reason or another I never did go back and have had this bar behind my teeth. Recently the bar became bent or something, as I can feel a slight rise with my tounge, and other parts are perfectly normal. Because of personal reasons I can't go see a dentist/ortahdontist for this issue -- would it be a mistake to remove this myself? Is that even possible? I've no idea what they used with it, but I'm assuming it's the same stuff they used with normal braces.

What your orthodontist put on your teeth is a permanent retainer. It is intended to stay on the teeth permanently to help teeth from shifting after braces come off. Some people have them for years and years and never have them removed. I do not advise you try and remove it yourself. The orthodontist bonded it to your teeth with a strong cement and removal by anyone other than a dental professional may seriously damage the enamel on those teeth. If the bar is bent, but not broken or falling off, I would leave it alone since you cannot visit a dentist or orthodontist. I know it feels weird, but it won't do you any harm and your tongue will get used to it. Hope this helps and good luck! =)

i have one to. i would highly recommend them taking it off but snce u said it's not an option... It seems like if the bar is bent it could mess up the alignment of your teeth. so i guess you could try to remove it but that's tricky too. good luck with w/e u do

You might really want to check in with a dentist.
I got the same thing, and they said if anything happened to it, I should come back.
Yes it is to keep your teeth straight.
Also with mine, they just glued the whole wire to the back of my teeth.

it's a permanent retainer. You can try and pry it off but it might hurt and you could do permanent damage to your teeth.

It is called a fixed retainer. The Dr. will sometimes place a fixed retainer when teeth have a tendency of getting spaces back after the braces are removed. A fixed retainer can be left there permanently however if it is bothering you and you will not go back to original orthodontists who placed the fixed retainer you can go to another one. Just look in the phone book and make an appointment. Just tell the new orthodontist that you are not comfortable with the old orthodontist and that you wanted to make an appointment. PS Do NOT under any circumstances try to remove this yourself!!!! You can cause more damage then you think...

Good Luck

I have that too. It's a retainer for you bottom teeth. Just leave it unless it's a huge bother, but then you should really get it checked out to get it fixed. It's probably a permanent one that you shouldn't take off unless you want your bottom teeth messed up. Good luck! :D
