Question about fillings & deep cleanings?!

Question: Well I had to get some fillings & yesterday I was eating (just ramen noodles) and all of a sudden I bit into something hard & I pulled it out of my mouth & it was my filling (tooth colored) I had just gotten it in Jan. (had to do it b4 my dental ins ran out when I turned 21). it hurts when i chew on that side & i have to drink from a straw so no liquid will touch it, it hurts! well, now I have no dental ins, but my mom told me that the dentist should fix it for free, since it is his mess up. Is that true? Also when I went to the dentist they said I needed a deep cleaning (because I am just starting to get periodontal disease & a reg cleaning wouldnt help, but a deep cleaning would stop it from progressing). They couldn't get it approved on my insurance in time before it ran out... so now I'm going to have to pay for it. My question about that is about how much is it... I know I'll have to call the dentist for the exact ammount, but I'm wanting to know what the average price is?? Thanks

I can't tell you about prices, but I can tell you that fillings are not made to last forever, it seems that they need to be redone every twenty years or so. Each time they redo them the hole they fill is larger until there is more filling than tooth. My experience has been that when there is more filling than tooth left, the tooth breaks off in big chunks and they can't fill it, they have to do a root canal and a crown, if there is enough root left. Believe me, teeth only get worse, not better. If I could go back and not have all of my teeth filled, I would. I am fifty and it will probably be ten years or less and I will need dentures, falsies. And I am not looking forward to that! As to your problem, when you ask the dentist if he will fix the filling he messed up on you might mention that you need a deep cleaning as well and if he could make it complimentary, you might be able to keep your bad experience with him about the filling to yourself. Or most dentists, if you have gone to them for a while will let you pay with installments. All you can do is ask, and the worst that he can do is say "no".
