Can you have an infection in your gums even if you don't have any teeth?!

Question: I had all of my teeth pulled like 4 months ago and I wear dentures and the gums are healed and closed up. Like 4 days ago I started having this constant throbbing pain on the lower left side of my mouth where your last tooth would be at and the pain goes straight down through the jaw bone. The pain reminds me of when I had teeth and I got abcesses and the area is so tender, throbbing and so painful. I have applied ice packs to numb it and it helps for a little bit. I am also very swollen on the left side of my jaw. I think it is spreading to the upper part of my mouth on the left side where the last tooth would be at there because now that is becoming painful as well. What is this kind of infection and can an infection be possible in the gums with no teeth? What if the infecton is really deep in to my jaw in to the part of the bone~will I need surgery? What will they do for me for all of this?

You can still get gum infections when teeth are all gone. Many things can start up under the dentures, especially if you wear them 24/7 and don't allow the gum tissue under them "breathe" at night. The best thing to do, is go see a dentist. What you have going on may not need antibiotic treatment, it may be a fungal or viral issue which will not respond to antibiotics. A dentist would really need to see it in order to do a proper diagnosis and treatment. Hope you feel better soon and good luck =)

Get to a dentist. Unless there's a dentist here on Yahoo! answers who's willing to step up to the plate. Any takers?

Of course you can get an infection in your gums without any teeth. Your teeth have never been infected - your gums have...

Your doctor will prescribe antibiotics and the infection will clear up. Don't start panicing about the infection making it's way into the bone. If you start on antibiotics right away you'll be feeling better within a couple days.

you should deffinerly see a dentist and try to cure it before it gets any worse. and dont do stuff to it even if you think it might help.

I suspect the denture is causing the problem if you are wearing them . They sometimes need adjusting?/ Can't be sure without seeing your mouth. See a dentist as soon as you can!! Doc W
