Can smoking cause the joint disorder TMJ?!

Question:

Can smoking cause the joint disorder TMJ?

If one goes for an extended period without smoking, then smokes, is it likely that tmj is to blame or perhaps only something, say, going on in the mouth or with the teeth?

Answers:

no smoking does not cause tmj ! teeth grinding and opening your mouth too wide are the causes of tmj. I know this for a fact because I have tmj. I have it for 25 years. dentist's wanted to do surgery and I said no! If it's not causing your jaw to lock then just leave it alone.
