Whats laughing gas like?!

Question: When I was in dental school we each had to breath in nitrous oxide to see what it's like. This is my experience

I felt light headed. The front half of my head felt "floaty". Yes, floaty.

Everything went in slow motion for me. My eye lids felt a little bit heavy and everything felt kinda nice.

THEN because my friends are jerks (in a nice way) they cranked the nitrous way up. So this is what it felt like to get over dosed albeit for only a few seconds.

I felt like I was vibrating, and I had tunnel vision. I was in the dental chair and only the patient light above me was visible, everything around me went blurry. They turned off the nitrous and after a few minutes of breathing in the oxygen I felt fine again.

iam not sure iam in the same boat you are in, i have never had it nor had a tooth pulled but soon i will be getting alot extracted and very nervous...and they were telling me they woudl give me gas??

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ....like that. :D

HaHa. Its very fun!!! You feel the same as if you huffed a can of air (like the computer cleaner stuff), but without the headache later. (I did stupid things as a teenager)

I have it every time you go to the dentist. However at the dentist I don't feel like laughing even with the gas. It make you feel really light and tingly. I like the sensation and the smell

It totally relaxes you. When you close your eyes, your mind wanders. When I had laughing gas, I would hear them working on my teeth, then my mind thought of cartoons doing work, it was so weird. It is a great feeling. Also, it sounds like people are talking really funny. When I heard people talk, I just laughed. Matter of fact, whenever I get laughing gas I laugh because I think of the funniest things.

It takes the edge off the pain too, so it is a mild analgesic. You can still respond to what the dentist asks of you, ie; turn left, put your chin up, etc.

Laughing gas is really great to have when you get nervous. I recommend it. However, some people can get headaches, stomachaches, and even vomit from it if the pressure is too high. To get off the "high" they give you pure oxygen, so you can drive home from the dentist by yourself without having to worry.

David S is right and I can add this..... if given too much it makes the chair feel like it is spinning and it can make you sick to your stomach.
Most of the time it just makes you tingle and feel numb all over. You don't have to breath real deep in order for it to work. Just breath through your nose in a natural way.

OH BOY!!! When they gave me laughing gas to remove my wisdom teeth, it was like... that tingly feeling when a body part falls asleep. It started at the top of my head, and slowly crept down my body. Then they gave me something to knock me out and i fell right asleep.

These are all correct descriptions. Everybody is different. I love the stuff myself! ;-) I feel light and heavy at the same time. Like I'm floating but also sinking deep into the chair. Things do sound funny and I feel like I sound funny. You like to giggle and have bizarre thoughts. Your hearing becomes very acute. It feels like you can hear things across the street. You know what is going on but don't care. You are conscious and responsive and HAPPY! If they get it up to high you will feel like you are laying on a spinning merry-go-round with your head on the outside of the circle. Sounds will be loud and soft, loud and soft and you may feel sick to your stomach. You can take a few deep breaths at first but then just breath normal THROUGH YOUR NOSE. If you feel nauseated, tell them and they will turn it down or off. If you don't feel loopy, ask them to turn it up. Nitrous has the quickest recovery time of any drug--five minutes of oxygen and it's like you never had it. Some people just don't like it, they don't like the loss of control or they are too relaxed and it is out of their comfort zone. But, most people do like it and consider it the best part of the dentist office! It was the best part of pain control class in dental school! We could jack it WAY up in there! They wanted us to experience all levels of sedation---Okie dokie by me! Nothing like 60 students zoning out at once (with 30 faculty of course)! Some where laughing, some were crying, vomiting, sleeping! Try it, if you don't like it turn it down or take it off. It can't hurt you! Wish I had a tank at home!!!!!

You start by feeling just a little out of it. Like your brain is a little foggy. Then, your extremities start to tingle. And it feels like you're flying. Like you're soaring away. And you can hear them working, and kinda feel them doing stuff, but you don't care at all because you're feeling great. It's pretty fun.

Great fun for most patients & much easier on the dentist to. Used it 20 yrs! Doc W
