If you're sick, is anesthesia likely to to kill you during surgery?!

Question: Anesthesia is UNLIKELY to kill you during surgery for any reason.

We take care of sick people all the time. If you have a cold, and you get a bowel obstruction, you're going to the OR. If it's elective surgery, though, we'll postpone it.

We can get you through the surgery just fine (even if we have to work a little harder at it). The problems come after surgery, when you may not heal well, or have trouble breathing.

If by "sick" you mean things like heart disease or diabetes, we take care of patients with those things all the time. We do like to make sure that those problems are being managed as well as they possibly can be. Many times, we refer patients to specialists to get the heart disease managed better, or the diabetes better controlled, before we'll anesthetize them.

Anesthesia is all about reducing risk. We get patients as "tuned up" as possible before surgery so that we can take the best possible care of them.

Anesthesiologists make big bucks for ensuring this does not happen.

Define sick.....a cold/heart problems.....?

If there are risks with your surgery due to the anaesthetic you would be told.... otherwise it is not informed consent.

Doubt it, The doctor won't give it to you if they think it will harm you.
