A tooth abscess or root abscess is pus enclosed in the tissues of the jaw bone at the tip of an infected tooth. Usually the abscess originates from a bacterial infection that has accumulated in the soft pulp of the tooth. This is usually but not always associated with what is commonly described as a dull throbbing excruciating ache.

A tooth abscess typically originates from dead pulp tissue, usually caused by untreated tooth decay, cracked teeth or extensive periodontal disease. A failed root canal treatment may also create a similar abscess.

There are two types of dental abscess. A periapical abscess starts in the dental pulp and is most common. A periodontal abscess begins in the supporting bone and tissue structures of the teeth.

An abscess is a cavity, usually in your mouth or under your skin. Bacteria can enter this area and grow at a high rate of speed. This causes pain, inflammation, and purulent drainage. Antibiotics are needed to treat this condition. They also sometimes need to be lanced and drained.

It's like an infection. want to know more go on www.ask.com it will give you the answer

this is a bacterial infection of the nerve in a tooth, not a cavity as somebody wrote

If you ever get one you will know about it.

Had a couple when very young. Very very painful. You will need emergency treatment to remove the tooth as it can cause blood poisoning (not that you will need any encouragement to go and see the dentist the way it hurts).

An abcess forms when the decay goes into the root and then a tiny ball of puss emerges from the root.
