Can I use Biaxin for a tooth infection?Medical Professionals only, please.?!

Question:

Can I use Biaxin for a tooth infection?Medical Professionals only, please.?

My dad has a horrible tooth ache and lives too far from the VA hospital, and if he did he can't get an appt. for at least 3 weeks.Well,I have some 500mg biaxin,it's a yr past the exp.date which I know isn't the best, but I have been told it may still be of good use.I just want him to get better because now his the infection spread to his throat and its painful.I just need to know if it may work.I know it's to be taken twice a day with food for ten days so any real KNOWLEDGABLE info would help. Not just people guessing,as they tend to do.Trying to catch a pharmacist or dr or nurse......thanks in advance.

Answers:

I wouldn't give it to him for 2 reasons:

1) it's a year past the expiration date. a month or 2, no big deal - a year...

2) biaxin is great for sinus infections, but not really great against the bugs that cause tooth infections. Penicillin is best. Clindamycin if he's allergic to Penicillin. Augmentin or Amoxicillin are also good.

PS - I would NEVER give him anything bought at a "feed store"!
