Could I get dry socket <pic>?!

Question: I had my tooth taken out, as well as part of my gums and some of my bone. After my the surgeon removed it all, he stitched it up. Can I still get dry socket? The instructions didn't say to avoid straws or anything, so I'm not sure if it's the same thing.

Here's a disgusting bloody picture of it, if you're into that.

Yes you can still get a dry socket. Dry sockets tend to occur anytime between 5-7 days after extraction. Keep in mind that this is just a general time frame. I had my dry socket 3 days after extraction. Best thing to do is avoid sucking on straws, smoking cigarettes, rinsing vigorously, rinsing with mouthwash that contains alcohol, or drinking carbonated beverages. As hard as it is, try to keep your tongue from poking around the site. Be sure to rest and eat well.
If you begin to develop pain the seems to be getting worse, throbbing, foul taste in your mouth, or foul smell, call your dentist immediately. They do have packing that can reduce the pain of a dry socket.

Yes you still can get it, but in order to prevent it after you have your teeth pulled or anything like that you need to rinse with warm salt water 2-3 times a day after a 24hr period. The reason why they say don't drink with a straw for 24-48hr is because you can bring up the socket of the nerve and cause dry socket.

yes you can..you will know if you get it..it is VERY VERY painful

Yeah...you can still get it. My sister got it after having her wisdom teeth removed. The directions say to wash with warm salt water. I hate salty tastes, so there was no way I would rinse with warm salt water so I diluted Listerine and rinsed that way. I personally think it's more effective.

SARAH,
AS YOU SAID, THE DENTIST PUT STITCHES THERE. THESE ARE MADE TO ALSO KEEP THE BLOOD CLOT IN PLACE WHICH PREVENTS A DRY SOCKET. SINCE THIS TOOTH WAS ALSO AN UPPER, A DRY SOCKET IS RARE IN THESE.
IF A DRY SOCKET WOULD FORM IT WOULD BE 24-48 HOURS AFTER EXTRACTION OF A LOWER WISDOM TOOTH WHERE THE BLOOD CLOT WAS DISTURBED.
YOU WILL BE FINE.

Even though your surgeon stitched up the extraction site - it is still possible to get a dry socket. Just refrain from using a straw for a couple of days and only gently swish the water around in your mouth when rinsing after brushing your teeth. You should do great!!
