Can a 50lb 4 year old be iv sedated for dental work?!

Question:

Can a 50lb 4 year old be iv sedated for dental work?

She has a cavity on one of her front teeth that needs to be dealt with but we can't afford the $2,000 hospital bill to have it done there under anesthesia. I got my wisdom teeth pulled with only a shot in the arm that made me unconscious. Can this be done on a little girl who is uncooperative to sit through the work with only novicane (typical behavior for age.)???

The pediatric dentist I take her to only does work for 3 & younger 4 year olds at the hospital. And to the person who said that she needs to go on a diet: She is a very healthy young girl who is not overweight and eats a mainly vegetarian diet. Cavities happen, stop being so judgemental and mean.

What is your problem! She is in the 100th percentile for her height, her weight is perfect. Get a life.

Answers:

Most 4 year olds are not very cooperative at the dentist. If it is a front tooth she will loose it in a few years. Is it hurting her? Often children with cavities do not have pain and the area can be watched. Otherwise, you might try nitrous oxide to help calm her so she can have the procedure done. Some pediatric dentists can prescibe other medications to calm her down so the procedure can be done also. Ask around about a good pediatric dentist.
