Anyone absolutely petrified of the dentist? Advice please!?!

Question: I haven't been to the dentist for about 6 years, because I'm so scared. I'm not worried about injections or anything, it's just having all the stuff in my mouth makes me feel sick and horrible. I really need to go as I have toothache, but I'm just so scared. Desperately need advice from people in my situation. Thanks.

I know EXACTLY what you are going through. Ihavent been to a dentist in so long I couldnt tell you when the last time was. Im scared. I do not like the needles or the sounds. But unfortuntly I have to go tomorrow and have 7 teeth extracted because of this. I will be getting a partial tp put in the place of the missing teeth but thats what I get for not going to the darned dentist. Im a weenie, I do cry when I go and Im almost 25 years old!!!! My advice to you, it helps a small amount is go with an opened mind, see if they can give you a pill or something to help with the anxiety( mine is giving me a valium(sp), get plenty of sleep, and try to think about how much better than tooth will feel once that toothache is gone :)I find that my problem is I stress about going as soon as I make the appointment. DO NOT do this, it makes it so much worse. I hope I helped a bit, now go happily to the dentist and get that toothache taken care of :)

im the same as you, but i havent been in ten years. i gotta register tomorrow somewhere. i think i have a hole. if i can, you can. deal?

Things have changed with dentists now - just book an appointment and tell him/her your fears.

They are good with people like you and me now.

I hate dentists but like you had to go - I spoke to him about my fears and he was brilliant -

Oh don't be a wimp. Be a man and face your irrational fears.

*Edit* Ah, you're a woman. Then it's ok to be a wimp. Don't see the dentist then

I am in the same position as you, i hate dentists but i know eventually i will have to bite the bullet so to speak, dentists are good these days they can give you sedation and all sorts not as creul as they once was back in the 70s!. Give it a go if i can pluck up the courage you can!
Best of wishes and be brave!
xx

Irrational fears are horrible, aren't they? I mean, you need to steel yourself because you may ruin your teeth and end up having to live at the dentist's in order to fix your teeth. Try to get therapy to deal with this fear. There are treatments to deal with phobias that are said to be quite good. There should be some dentists in your area who specialize in treating fearful patients.

good luck.

I feel your pain, nothing scares me more than someone messing with my teeth, I would rather chew my own arm off. Luckily Im blessed with glorious teeth or Id have killed my self long ago. Theres not much you can do other than brave it, sorry, I always take a friend with me and freak out in the reception it takes the pressure off driving yourself insane with paranoia.

You can always get nitrous-oxide pumped through a small mask that covers your nose. It makes you very relaxed, and has been known to make the biggest difference for people who are scared of dental procedures like yourself.

Well I had not been to a dentist in 22 years, I'm 33. I always threw a fit each time I had to go and mom could never get me to go. I was so scared of stuff falling in my throat, Oh gosh, not to mention the suction!!! I was really scared for all those years but then I started to have bleeding so I had to go. I had no cavities and all was great. Dentists and hygienists are so much more careful now than they were long ago! Don't worry about anything. If you are really scared they will stop in the middle of your cleaning so that you can breathe and relax! Take a buddy with you, you'll be just fine!

I cried once at the dentist, because I felt so nervous. So dont feel like a fool if you do, because it happens to lots of people.

Go as soon as possible. I did't go for 3 years beacuse I hate to go now I have to get 5 extractions and an upper partial plate. I am only 32. If I only went for those 6 checkups. I might not be in the situation.

I understand what you are going through, I've been there too. I visited this site and it made me feel a lot better.

Also, some dentists are able/willing to prescribe medicine to help you relax.

You're not alone and I'm guessing that everybody is afraid of the dentist even those who are brave.

Having four teeth pulled out myself and then fixed braces was surely a scary experience for me.

Just stay relaxed, close your eyes and think of something that would take your mind off the dentist. Pretend you're somewhere else apart from the dentist. It sure helps me.
