Answers: i have to get braces. but my parents r depressed because it cost so much.
Why r they soo expensive?

I'm a dentist.

Braces are expensive for four reasons:

1. Because orthodontists hold a virtual monopoly on braces. There are many general dentists who place braces, but the vast majority don't. Why? Because dental schools teach dental students next to nothing about braces--the only thing they teach us is the scientific aspect of orthodontics. Hence, because there is little competition, orthodontists can charge whatever they damn-well please.

2. Because orthodontic work takes time. Braces are not like fillings or crowns. It is an ongoing process that may take as many as three years. That warrants a high price.

3. Because the results from orthodontic work can be as dramatic as cosmetic surgery. Hence, people are willing to pay for it. And when people are willing to pay high prices for it, orthodontists will charge high prices.

4. Because most orthodontic work is performed on children. And most parents (who have enough money...and even some that don't) are willing to spend a lot of money on their kids' appearance.

So, in summary, braces cost a lot of money because it's in high demand AND because orthodontists are pretty-much the only ones who can place them.

Because they require the attention of a person who has gone through college for four years, through dental school for two more years and who has, by the time they open up their doors for business, invested about a half million dollars into their practice.

That's why dentistry, good dentistry, is costly.

idk.. i had braces for 6 MONTHS YAY IN SECOND GRADE! and i LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE my teeth lol. =]

i don't know!Kids glasses are free why aren't braces! It is like saying if you are poor you have to have bad teeth! So unfair!

I suppose we should count ourselves lucky in the UK - they're free to school kids! And you can get all different colours and styles!!

They are customised for a person and require many sittings

I am actually not sure. I have been questioning that myself! Good question! lol Maybe because they are made out of metal, which is expensive I guess....lol

Have a nice day :-)

Well if you break down the expense, into monthly visits for a minimum of 2 years it's not an unreasonable amount. Some people have orthodontia for even longer.

Yeah, I work for an orthodontist. He had to 4 years of college, 4 years of dental school, and 3 years of orthodontic training. 11 years of college!!!! The supplies are insanely expensive. Having an experienced knowledgeable staff is costly, not to mention the normal cost of business and insurance. I always cringe when I'm paying all the bills. Glad they are not mine!
-Wow, someone must have not been able to get into ortho school? The competition for orthodontists is the most of any specialty. We lose our patients ever 2 years. Dentists have them forever.
