Are dental problems hereditary?!

Question:

Are dental problems hereditary?

I have bad dental problems and I was wondering if it is hereditary. I really need to get them fixed b/c they cause too much pain and embarrassment, but I can't afford. Are there any ways to get dental care at an affordable price? I am 19.

Answers:

Jaw size, mouth shape and teeth positioning are hereitary, as well as predisposition to periodontal (gum) disease. Cavities are not hereditary, and can be prevented. Certain health conditions that may dry the mouth out, or those that require medication that can dry the mouth and increase the risk of cavites however can be hereditary. If you a your parents are healthy, and they have had cavities, it does not mean you will be more likely to get them. They can be prevented by regular brushing and flossing and checkups with your dentist.
