Is the dentist supposed to prescribe antibiotics after a root canal?!

Question: I had a root canal done about a month ago. Three weeks ago, I went to the dentist because I noticed that my gums above the tooth were sore. When I came in the dentist explained that I should have called her sooner about the pain. The thing was, I didn't even realize that the gums were sore until that week (the tooth is towards the back in a place I don't poke very often with my finger). She then prescribed me antibiotics (clyndamicin) for a week.

It has been a week and the antibiotics did no good. I am wondering if she is at fault for not prescribing me the meds directly after the procedure. I've had root canals before and this has been the routine. Am I correct in thinking that she should have done this for me after the procedure?

Some do & some do not!! I always did give them to the patients kept them in the office cause they were so expensive at the drug store!! Doc W

Antibiotics are for infections. If your root canal got infected afterwards then it would make sense...besides that maybe you should get some prescription pain reliever like vicodin

I think dentist only prescribe medication if you are experiencing pain. I had a root canal done one time and my dentist did not prescribe me anything. Of course, I don't remember having any pain afterwards either.
