Answers:

For multiple teeth, the dentist will likely recommend that you be put under.

1) Breathe gas that makes you feel fuzzy and floaty
2) Insert IV with anestetic to make you really go under
3) Use novacane (shots) to numb the entire area.

They use the gas so you don't worry about the IV, and the IV so you don't feel all the shots. They will give you several shots around the gums and teeth being removed, which would be painful IF you weren't already thinking happy thoughts under the medicine.

You wake up a few minutes after the teeth are out, and will feel groggy and sleepy for several hours. The novicane takes hours to wear off, too. Take the pain medicine (advil, or whatever the dentist prescribes) BEFORE the shots wear off. You want to be 'ahead' of the pain, rather than try to fight it later. Follow the dentist's schedule for antibiotics, brushing and oral care, and pain medicine and you will be fine.

They very occasionally will have the patient 'awake' for wisdom teeth -- but only if you have a history of having trouble with the gas or IV. They would MUCH rather have you totally relaxed, with your jaw easy to move, and not worrying about anything the staff says to each other while they are working.
