Who here has had a root canal? What was the pain before, during and after?!

Question: I was told I may need a root canal a couple of months ago. I am super scared of the dentist so I put it off. Now I am having pain that is throbbing and it shoots down my jaw. It is sensitive to heat and cold. Its been aching all day. I know I need to go and its my fault for letting it get this bad and now I have to face the dentist whether I want to or not. What was the procedure like for you? Its in the bottom, center of my right cheek. How long does it usually take and what is the healing time. Please help!!!

The root canal will feel better then dealing with the pain you are having now. I had to have a root canal done on 3 teeth the same day. The worst thing is the novicaine which isn't done any differently then it would normally be done. It didnt feel like it was super long. But my mouth was insanely dry from it lol. You are psyching your self out over nothing. And there is little to no healling time. I went home and took a couple hour nap tho. If you are still freaked out about it go talk to your dentist and have him address your concerns if he won't find another dentist. I love my dentist he is awesome. I always used to be freaked out about going to the dentist now I don't mind at all. Well hopefully this helped feel free to email me any questions

Good Luck!

From speaking from experience it hurts, but not as much as you think it would, it especially hurts when the dentist inserted the needle, and you can not have a root canal in one day, it is a process that takes months, cos everyone month you get a different needle. but in the end its worth it, fear should not get into health, good luck and don't worry, its better for your teeth to hurt a little , than for you to go through the pain everyday.
good luck.

My root canal specialist works fast and in 35-40 minutes he's done. After the procedure you will need a pain pill and by the next morning you'll feel fine. The worst pain is experiencing the nerve pain before the nerve completely dies like what you're going through now. That's why the sooner you get it done the better you will feel. The procedure of the root canal is very straight forward and you won't feel any pain. A couple of shots by the dentist to kill the nerve is all you'll need for the procedure. The first root canal is always kind of scary because you don't know what to expect but afterward you will say it's not that bad. The idea of using small needles for the procedure is somewhat scary at first but you won't feel a thing. Just the slight pushing action by the Dentist. I think using gas is way unnecessary unless you just like to feel high. The staff will always want you feel comfortable and for you to tell them if you have any pain at all through the procedure. The next day you will feel like a new person again. Thank goodness for root canals and the cure for tooth nerve pain. Don't put it off any longer as the pain will only get worse and that is no fun.

lol sorry, I shouldn't laugh. ok..it normally takes about 45 mintues. ask for the gas. it really relaxes u and it also helps on the numbing. AND ask if they can give u something BEFORE u come in. Some dentist will ask if u need a pill if they don't just ASK them, tell them u are VERY nervous and was wanting to see if they give u something before hand, I think it is Valium. They only prescribe u one. it will calm u down though. They give u a shot of course in the mouth, yes it is a very big ouch of a stick...use the gas, it helps...but once u get past the stick, no pain at all...its really funny when they are done. ur mouth is SO numb, all jaw will be this way for a couple hours...after that it does not hurt at all, just feels weird. u are gonna want to baby it and not eat on that side for fear it may hurt, I think thats normal reaction...but I have had a couple of them because I hate payin for it, we don't have the best dental plan and I put my kids before myself. but to me, it does not hurt at all AFTERWARDS...its that shot.

You have an abscess and need a root canal. root canals dont hurt while having them done it feels like a filling but takes more time. Go to the dentist to get anti biotics to stop the pain and keep the abscess at bay before it swells up.
