Are you afraid to go to the dentist?!

Question:

Are you afraid to go to the dentist?

Answers:

I'm not, but since I am a dentist that would mean I was afraid of myself and afraid to go to work!

However, I'm not at all surprised that so many people are afraid of us. In fact, it is so common it is virtually the norm. The trouble is, we lie you back so you feel you can't escape, we lean over your personal space in a very intimate way, we use a variety of noisy and odd looking instruments including drills and needles, and there is always the chance that there may be some pain or discomfort.

The good news is, most f these things are manageable. I set clear boundaries with people so they now they can escape, know that I will stop. I'm happy for the use of headphones to block out noise, I'm happy to explain exactly what will happen if that is what my patients want and I understand that sudden moves can be frightening so don't make them. There are plenty of other dentists like me, and no excuses for the ones who don't take these measures.

In addition, there are other steps that can help with fear including acupuncture and hypnotherapy, as well as more traditional methods involving drugs, such as diazepam, or sedation which totally relaxes you ad wipes out your memory of events without totally knocking you out.

For all those who answer 'yes' to this question, please talk about all of the above with your dentist. If they don't listen, look for a new dentist who actually cares.
