Are they:
painful

I will answer all these truthfully. Please, don't be nervous! That is what hurts you the most! Trust me, it won't hurt as much as you think it does, I PROMISE!
Are they:
Painful? Yes.
Hard to deal with? No, annoying though.
Annoying? Yes :)
Good or bad looking? Good looking.
Not so bad? After the first week, not bad at all.
Hard to sleep with? No, once you get to sleep, you're pretty much fine.
Distracting? Only if you think about them. :)
Don't worry, I had braces, and I over-exaggerated alot, and it didn't hurt as much. Keep your chin up, and don't get to worked up about it!

When I was 15 I was given a choice between braces and a telescope (or any other expensive birthday present). I chose the telescope, and I regret it... a little pain to get a better smile (and maybe prevent gum and cheek problems later on) is definitely worth it!
Oh, and Joe S's answer is great.
They aren't destracting. They hurt for the first day or so. They're cool looking cause you can get color bands on them to match things like holidays. They aren't annoying unless you get something stuck in them. Not hard to sleep at night except the first night or so. Then you get used them. Take some tylenol before you go Friday and continue for the first day and you should be fine.
