Teeth sensitivity?!

Question:

Teeth sensitivity?

Answers:

If you are experiencing sensitive teeth it may be caused by decay (cavities) or possibly recession. Recession is when you have lost some gum tissue due to hard brushing, tooth position or periodontal (bone) disease and the root of the tooth is showing. Some of my patients are also irritated by toothpaste with whitener or tartar control components in it. The root surface is like a sponge and hot/cold things may irritate the areas. Easiest and least expensive way to help reduce the sensitivity is to use a sensitive tooth toothpaste exclusively. One of the components in the paste plugs up the sponge like holes in the root surface relieving the irritation. You may need to use this for a month though to get results. If this doesn't resolve your problem you need to mention it to your dentist or hygienist so they can look further for a cause. Good luck!
