Not removing Wisdom Teeth?!

Question: I've been looking up on removing wisdom teeth and etc, and it seems like it's a big deal. My parents did not get theirs removed, and they're fine. Is it okay if you don't get it removed (if there are no problems)? Because I REALLY don't want to get them removed, it looks SO painful. I still have two that didn't grow it. I just want to know if we HAVE to remove them, do any of you still have your wisdom teeth? How is it/you doing?

Compared to any surgery you would do at a hospital, it's not a big deal. I had all four of mine removed at the same time, no problem. I happen to work for an oral surgeon, and I can tell you that we don't always recommend they get removed. It depends on a lot of different factors. If they are coming in and you have room, no problem...just make sure to keep them clean. If they don't have room, it depends on if they will cause possible damage to the teeth next to them, they could cause a cyst, they may try to come out later, etc. The only way you will know for sure is to go to an oral surgeon for a consultation. I'd even tell them you were thinking of leaving them and see what they say. At least get an educated opinion from a professional. (My husband had his until he was 24, they started getting cavities, so to prevent the cavities from spreading, he had them extracted. My best friend still has hers and she's in her mid 30's...everyone is different.)

Removing wisdom teeth isn't that bad. I had my tonsils out the year before I had those come out and beleive me, tonsils are BAD! (I was 16 for the tonsils, and 17 for the wisdom teeth) I had one wisdom tooth come in fine, no problems at all. It fit in my mouth just fine... The other 3 however didn't go as well. 2 of them were coming in the wicked wrong way, and the other one was impacted. That can be very painful! They removed all 4 of them because what would be the point of just keeping one? It wouldn't be doing anything back there except being another potential site for cavities, because it is hard to clean way back there.

You don't HAVE to remove them, just be sure that they are coming in correctly. You don't want impacted teeth! Your dentist can help you keep an eye on them. Good luck!

I still have all mines. I don't think you should remove them if they don't hurt, why change something that isn't broken right? but some of my friends have theirs taken out because it was hurting them and they said they had to cut deep in the gums or something because the roots is long.

you only have to have them removed if you are having problems with them. My mouth was too small to accommodate my wisdom teeth coming in and every few months would get infected. I finally scraped together enough cash and had them removed. it wasnt bad, i mean it wasnt a walk in the park but with within 2 days i felt right as rain

Hey if not a problem then keep them just brush them well !! Doc W
